Rule #1: “Never buy at auction if you have’t seen the item in the viewing”. I was sitting in a small auction room in Lyon, France. Lot number 731 “une chambre a coucher, faux-bamboo” came up. Did I miss something? Nobody was bidding for this great 19th century bedroom set, including a fabulous armoire. Forget the rules: raise your hand, BUY! I was lucky. It turned out to be the finest armoire in faux bamboo we’ve ever bought. We like it so much that we’ve made an exact replica.
